Installing a Hard Disk |
|
|
Here is our step by step guide to installing a new
hard disk
- Unpack the HDD - ensure that you do not touch any
of the electronics and ideally you should have some
anti static protection.
- Most PCs can take up to 4 IDE Devices. When you
open your PC you will see two cables coming from the
mother board like this. These cables are capable of
running two IDE devices a master and a slave.

- Locate the IDE Configuration Pins on the Hard disk.
These can usually be found next to the power and data
connections, and will be a group of 6-8 small pins
with a small plastic 'jumper' attached between two
of the pins. On top of the hard disk you will see
the jumper settings. Usually the following options
are included:
- Master - This is the setting used if you want
this device to be teh master, you will then need
to set the other device on the cable as slave
- Slave - as master but the other way round
- Single - these are the seetings if this is the
only device connected to the cable
- Cable select - this will mean that depending
which connector on the cable will determine whether
its a master or slave
- Secure the drive in place and connect the power
lead.
- If you are running windows 98 onwards the PC will
configure the drive automatically when you re-boot.
